Wart Removal Using Duct Tape

Warts are flesh colored or gray colored bumps that appear on the skin. These bumps are the result of being infected with the HPV virus. Most individuals think of genital warts when they hear HPV, but this virus is responsible for all warts. There are over 100 different strains of HPV that can cause warts or various parts of the body.

Warts are usually not painful, nor do they cause problems. Some individuals will choose to leave their warts alone if they are not causing any harm. Other individuals who have warts in prominent places will seek out the best wart removal product. However, there is no need to spend a lot of money. The duct tape wart removal method can sometimes be used to get rid of unwanted warts.

Six Types of Warts

There are six main types of warts. The duct tape wart removal method will not work on all types of warts. For example, you could not put duct tape on the vagina in hopes of getting rid of genital warts. Before you think about using this wart removal method you need to be familiar with the types of warts you may have.

1. Common warts

These are warts that are dome shaped and normally found on the fingers, hands and knees.

2. Plantar Warts

These warts are found on the bottom of the feet. They can become very painful and interfere with walking or standing.

3. Filiform Warts

Filiform warts are often found on the face and neck. They look like a stalk or twig sticking out from the surface of the skin.

4. Periungual Warts

These are warts that are found around the nails or under the nails. These types of warts are very difficult to get rid of because of their location.

5. Flat Warts

These are flat looking warts that appear on the face and legs. They often appear in large numbers.

6. Genital Warts

Genital warts are warts that are found on the genital area of both men and women. These are considered to be a sexually transmitted disease. Certain strains of HPV that produces these warts are known to cause cancer, especially cervical cancer in women.

Is Duct Tape Wart Removal a Good Treatment Option?

Researchers now claim that duct tape wart removal is more effective and less painful than liquid nitrogen, which is normally used to get rid of warts. This claim does have some proof to back it up. A study was conducted at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington state. This study had 51 participants with half of the participants applying duct tape to their warts and the other half receiving cryotherapy to freeze the warts off.

After six days the participants removed the tape, soaked the warts in water, and filed the tops with an emery board. They replaced the duct tape and repeated the process every six days for six months or until the wart was gone. At the end of the study, 85 of the 26 participants who used duct tape got rid of their warts compared to only 60 of the 25 participants who froze their warts.

The theory behind why duct tape works is simple. The duct tape irritates the warts which causes an immune response. Once an immune response is initiated the body will react by attacking the growth at the site of the irritation.

How to Use Duct Tape to Remove Warts

The duct tape wart removal method has a few steps that should be followed for maximum results.

  1. Cut off a piece of duct tape that resembles the size and shape of the wart.
  2. Apply this tape to the wart and leave it in place for six days. If the tape falls off before the six days is up, replace it.
  3. Once six days have gone by, remove the tape and soak the area in water. After soaking, dry the area and then gently scrub the wart area with a pumice stone or emery board. Leave the tape off overnight.
  4. In the morning, apply another piece of duct tape and leave it in place for six days. Repeat the process until the wart is gone.

The duct tape wart removal method could be an inexpensive option if you suffer from warts. Just keep in mind, it may take several weeks to a few months to get rid of warts completely using this method.  A quicker solution may be found by visiting your Doctor or trying a wart removal cream.
